Appropriate care of the Spine Injured Athlete:

  1. Have an EAP with local EMS
  2. Use the “Medical Timeout”
  3. Proper assessment and management of the injury
  4. Remove equipment prior to transport
  5. Equipment removal should be performed by at least 3 experienced rescuers
  6. Know the different equipment for the different sports…and how to remove it
  7. Apply rigid CERVICAL stabilization device prior to transport
  8. Spine injured Athlete should be transported using a rigid immobilization device
    1. NASEMSO does NOT support the use of rigid backboards for transport…only extraction.
    2. Certain situations warrant one but not many spine injuries require transport using a rigid immobilization device
  9. Use techniques to minimize spinal motion
  10. Develop a plan prior to the start of the any events
  11. Patient transport directly to a facility that can handle the spinal trauma.
  12. Collaborate with medical staff, coaches and athletes in prevention of spine injuries
  13. Medical team needs a strong working knowledge of current research
  14. Future research continue to investigate the efficacy of these devices
