Tanya Watson – 540

Tanya Watson actually lived about 5 minutes from where I live now/ Although she has moved to New Mexico and spent most of her recent career there, we are connected.

The Women of Athletic Training

What is your AT Story?

Tanya Watson grew up in Las Cruces NM and found out about Athletic Training in Middle School and went to the Athletic Training Clinic at New Mexico State University (NMSU) for “growing pains” in her knees.

Tanya attended NMSU, graduated in 2001 from the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) and BOC Certified in April 2002.

She then worked as a Licensed Athletic Training  Intern at NMSU for the Spring of 2002 covering the Track & Field team.

Following NMSU Tanya attended graduate school at the University of Wyoming 2002-2004 & obtained an MS in Kinesiology. While there she worked in athletics with football, swimming and diving, track and field, and wrestling.

Tanya was an Assistant Athletic Trainer at University of Alabama Birmingham from August 2004-June 2006 working with Women’s Basketball. She also supervised GA’s working with women’s sports.

From July 2006- July 2009 she was an Associate Athletic Trainer at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg MS, Working with Women’s Basketball & Men’s Tennis.

Tanya Watson was also adjunct faculty and the Interim Clinical Coordinator for the ATEP (2007-2008).

She returned home to Las Cruces New Mexico in August 2009 and worked at Las Cruces Orthopaedic Associates as a Physician Extender and Clinic Manager until September 2014 when she accepted an emergency hire Term/Temp Faculty position at NMSU to teach in the ATEP.

May 2017 earned an MA in Curriculum and Instruction at NMSU. Now I am the Athletic Trainer as Las Cruces High School (my alma mater).

What leadership are you giving to ATs now?

Tanya Watson is serving in her current role as Southern Rep on the New Mexico Athletic Trainers Association Board. She has been in this position since 2016.

What are some of your best memories in AT?

As a woman in AT what are some of your challenges?

Coming out of college Tanya was not even considered for professional sports jobs.

Felt an internal pressure to put her career on the back burned to move home and be closer to elderly parents. Men do this as well, but more often it is women taking care of the family over career.

What do you want your legacy to be?

That every athlete I took care of knows they received my best care I was able to provide at that time. That their skill level or nationality did not influence how I provided care.

Boiron Homeopathic – 538

Homeopathic Medicine – according to WebMD

Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that the body can cure itself. Those who practice it use tiny amounts of natural substances, like plants and minerals. They believe these stimulate the healing process.

It was developed in the late 1700s in Germany.

It’s common in many European countries, but it’s not quite as popular in the United States.”

Boiron; Boiron USA; BoironUSA; Sebastien Le Toux; Janick Boudazin

Who is your patient?

One of the things I have learned over the years of doing the podcast is understanding where the patient comes from.
Just because I might not believe in moving energy along the meridians does not mean the Asian acrobat in cirque du soleil does not believe /need that treatment to heal.

About Boiron

According to their website:

Boiron, world leader in homeopathic medicines, is a $852 million public company with 3,700 employees and distribution in 59 countries. It is best known for Oscillococcinum®, a top-selling flu medicine, and its Arnicare® line of pain relievers.

For more than 80 years, Boiron has been committed to funding scientific research and educating the public and healthcare professionals on homeopathic medicines.

As a pharmaceutical company, Boiron maintains the highest standards in manufacturing, complying with U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations, the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States and drug Good Manufacturing Practices.

Is it safe?

Homeopathy thrives on letting the body heal itself with natural aides we find in the earth.

Janick Boudazin – CEO answers plainly “YES”

Sebastien Le Toux , Philladelphia Union Ring of Honor inductee, uses arincare by Boiron still after retirement.

His mom has used it since he was a young child growing up in France.

Nancy Burke – Women of AT – 537

A pioneer, innovator and hard worker, Nancy Burke has never been afraid of challenging the norms.

Her induction into the NATA Hall of Fame symbolizes how much change one person can make.

What does retirement after 40 years of AT look like?

Nancy says she…

Played golf

spent some time on her pontoon boat

but that led to…boredom

How does Nancy Burke continue to grow as an AT?

  • Surround myself with forward thinking people. ATs who ask “What will Athletic Training look like in 10 years, 20 years?”
  • Getting her NPI number and advocating all ATs to get theirs.
  • AT Journals and publications
  • Reading up on various State Practice Acts
  • Building relationships with local ATs
  • Attend state and national meetings
  • Collaborate with both older and younger ATs

What are Nancy Burke's top moments in Athletic Training?

Receiving the phone call to be inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame.

Getting a phone call from Marjorie “Marje” Albohm requesting that Nancy be a speaker for the national meeting.

Discuss a low point in your career?

Working as the GA for Eastern Kentucky Nancy Burke was expected to be the next hire for the female At position.

She was not hired for that position

This made Nancy questions who she was, what she wanted to do and why she wanted to do it.

Ultimately after a few days in hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains she figured out she wanted to make an impact at the high school level and with 4 months that is where she was working.

Imbalance and Disequilibrium – 532

Did you know your concussion may just be an imbalance…

Dr. Mark Knoblauch shares some personal and professional experience in dealing with / treating these concussion like symptoms.

So it is not a concussion?

Here is the scenario:

  • Athlete hit in the head,
  • Has balance problems
  • No trouble with memory
  • Head only hurts at the spot of impact

Is this athlete going to be put under Concussion RTP?

So what are we looking at then?

Dr. Mark Knoblauch joins us to discuss vestibular injuries….which might not actually be concussions.

Email Dr. Knoblauch to receive his free gift –
maknobla@Central.UH.EDU

Some of the topics Mark covers include:

  • Why do you have an interest in vestibular disorders?
  • Tell me about your own personal history with
  • Explain how the vestibular system works?
  • What are some of the signs and symptoms of the more common vestibular disorders?
  • What is the prevalence of some of these disorders?
  • If these disorders are prevalent, as you say, why do you think that there is very little attention in education about them?
  • What are some of the disorders or conditions that can result from the vestibular system?
  • What treatments are available
  • How do some of the vestibular disorders differ from concussions,
  • How can athletic trainers differentiate the two types of conditions?
  • What kind of education do we need specific to teaching our profession and students more about vestibular disorders?
