David Gallegos discusses COPA – 601

What is COPA?

Have you ever asked yourself what COPA stands for and what purpose they serve the membership of the NATA?

Today on the podcast David Gallegos from District 7 and the current director of COPA or the Committee on Practice Advancement joins Alisha M Pennington live from the Dragonfly Max Podcast Lounge.

David Gallegos discusses COPA

Why is COPA a committee and not a council?

At its formation, they took into consideration what the membership was asking for and what they needed.  They realized that there was a variety of emerging settings within athletic training and they wanted to have a broader perspective and more voices.

To meet that need COPA consists of 10 committees that each has 3 members and 1 chair (8 practice-based committees, 1 analytics and outcome, and 1 public health) and these committees represent the future of practice advancement.

What need does COPA address?

David believes that representation matters.  We give a voice to the variety of emerging settings in Athletic Training and offers members resources to help them investigate these emerging settings and connect with other professionals in these settings.

Since June 2018 they have been tracking their progress and have seen improvements.

What is the triple aim of health care and how can data and analytics benefit athletic training?

The triple aim of health care is the simultaneous pursuit of:

  • Improving the patient experience of care
  • Improving the health of populations while
  • Reducing per capita cost in health care

The sub-committee on Data and Analytics has been able to use data from Bobby Lee a health care economist to help show how athletic trainers in a variety of settings can improve the triple aim of health care.  Bobby Lee’s data showed that an AT in a secondary school reduced the costs of Medicare/Medicaid by 10-12%.

What Does David think will be the leading job settings in the future of athletic training?

COPA settings allow people to move back and forth between settings as an athletic trainer that match where they are in their life at that time.

How can you help COPA and the NATA?

Realize that COPA is part of the NATA.  Speak up if there is a setting you want to investigate or be a part of the committee.  Get involved and be the change you wish to see

Own Your Impact – 597

Do YOU Own Your Impact as an Athletic Trainer?

What does “Own Your Impact” look like for leadership

Tory Lindley hit the ground running when he was elected president of the NATA in June of 2018.  During the NATA symposium in June 2019, Alisha M Pennington caught up with him to talk about his vision for athletic trainers to Own Their Impact, what we can do as individuals to advocate for the profession and what the NATA board of directors and 29 committees have been working on to continue to elevate the profession in every setting.

Own Your Impact

Tory's biggest accomplishment since taking office?

The collaborative agreement between the NATA and APTA.  There is now a door open and expectation that the national level of collaboration will have some effect on the ways that AT’s are practicing at the state level.

What can we do on a daily basis to Own Your Impact and advocate for the profession?

Every athletic trainer has an individual responsibility to advocate for the profession and to advocate for ourselves.

“If you look like health care individually then the advocacy thing happens because people are paying attention.”  Tory Lindley

Every AT needs to get their NPI.

Even if you aren’t going to be billing at the third party level, you need to register because it is how we are counted as health care professionals.

What initiatives will Tory investigate and pursue?

CMS recognition will help with not only billing but also for recognition and acceptance as a health care profession.

Salary initiatives for increases in a variety of settings and also ensure that we close the gender gap.

What does Own Your Impact look like to Tory?

“We are super humble as health care providers.  We like to work behind the scenes, and yet we can still be humble and be bold enough to tell our story when it makes sense to have our story told.”

All AT’s have an opportunity through social media to write their narrative.  To talk about things that they are doing and educating people on a daily basis of what we do.

How will we continue to see great things continue to happen?

“When the AT is given the opportunity to practice at the top of their skill set, great things will always happen.  We need to make sure that is something every AT can do.”

Ever wondered what Firefly Recovery is?

Jeremy closes out the podcast today by talking to Anthony Kjenstad from Firefly Recovery about the products from Firefly that can help with increasing blood flow to decrease recovery time and help with delayed onset muscle soreness.

The product is being promoted by athletic trainers who have been using the tool in their training rooms and have had success.

During the episode, she shares why she believes being multidisciplinary is to her and the patients she treats advantage.

Challenging the Status Quo – 590

Kent Games Coaching is all about challenging the status quo. He was one of the youngest professors to be offered tenure. Kent was obtaining his dream job at his alma mater.

But that wasn't enough. He still felt empty.

Challenging the Status Quo

Dr. Kent Games began evaluating his life through these questions:

  • Did I LIVE?
  • Did I LOVE?
  • Did I MATTER?

Alisha is always growing and challenging the status quo

If you follow Alisha Pennington, owner of ATvantage, on social media she readily admits to her lack of confidence, her need for approval, her attempts to hide doubts and fears.

She has learned to embrace those doubts and fears and test them.

Live from NATA 2019

DragonflyMax hosted the podcast lounge again this year and we had a phenomenal team of hosts and workers to put on a fantastic show.

Kent and Alisha answer three big questions:

  • Why
  • How
  • What

Following the Simon Sinek book Start With Why and the follow up Find Your Why Kent and Alisha work through the foundation of what it takes to challenge the status quo.

Some bits of knowledge from the conversation:

Finding your why is as much about what it is is NOT as is it about what it IS

As professionals, we find there is not one cookie-cutter path, but as students, we are often lead to believe that A+B+C = D and that is how it should work.

The more you give your self permission to listen and explore that quiet whisper the louder your why will become. We are trained to tune it out and follow the leader.

Alisha kept pressing forward looking for that feeling of “I have arrived” but it was never there. She came to learn it is about the journey and not the destination.

Ther are many more helpful and insightful lessons form the podcast. listen to it as many times as you need to.

State Advocacy with Kevin King – 584

North Carolina and Kevin King are killing State Advocacy

Currently an assistant Athletic Trainer for the Carolina Panthers, Kevin King has helped lead North Carolina to many great achievements in State advocacy and PR.

Kevin is a co-chair of the NCAT PR committee

In the interview, Alisha discusses the Ballerina Project with Kevin and where they partnered with a dance studio and photographed dancers to create injury prevention posters and videos.

State Advocacy with Kevin King

Kevin King is a Bowtie Guy

One of the NCATA flags was made into a bowtie and sold as a limited edition fundraiser for part of their state advocacy efforts.

While chatting with Kevin after the podcast People were asking where they could get one, but as he said, they are limited edition.

You can find your own style with The Two Guys Bowtie

Life Balance

I recently interviewed an NFL AT and the biggest concern was life balance and raising a family.

Alisha and Kevin King are both life balance people. We try not to use work/ life balance because work is part of your life that needs to stay in balance. trying to completely separate them causes more problems.

A few tips from Kevin:

  • Start with a solid staff understanding
  • When at home, be at home
  • A partner you can connect with is EVERYTHING

Third Party Billing – 581

What is Third Party Billing?

Third Party Billing means a patient comes in to see the AT and the AT sends the bill for payment to the insurance company. It does not mean you are working at a clinic and being paid hourly by the general fund, but you are billing for services as a PT or DC would.

Who is Joe Greene?

Started at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in 1991

Through various roles at the hospital, he was able to quickly move into an administrative role. Coupled with his state leadership roles, He was really able to look at Third Party Billing a make an impact.

2001 Implemented Autonomous Billing in Wisconsin

What is Orthovise?

The company Joe started to work with physicians and continue growing the autonomous billing aspect of Athletic Training.

2016 NATA issued an RFP pilot project to Joe Green and his team as the pioneer in 3rd party billing

What are the goals of the third party reimbursement project?

Ensure ATs receive reimbursement by insurance companies consistent with other allied healthcare providers. If a PT does manual therapy billed at $60/hour, then the AT acting within their scope doing the same task can be reimbursed at $60/hour.

Secure Consistent recognition of Athletic Trainers as allied health care professionals

What has the pilot study revealed?

  • When ATs bill according to the policy they are reimbursed at a consistent level
  • There are some gaps in analysis
  • Are AT as cost-effective?

What Education is going on with this?

Payor (consumer) and Employers (hospitals/physician) are both needing education

ATs need to be able to bill correctly using the correct codes

Tim watched his dad run a successful business and kinda always had the drive in him to create his own.

I recently started my own business in the Sports Medicine Broadcast. I have shared my story in episode 552.

I was always afraid to start a business as I have seen how much my dad struggles to own one. My conversation with Rob and Casey helped me to get started on the path, but Innovate really moved me to start

I met Tim Neal in a group for Athletic Trainers who are innovating the industry. If you are innovating or want to innovate, come join us at InnovateAT on facebook

Want to check out the live video:
