What is Ramadan?
- Ramadan is the holiest observance of the world's second-largest religion.
- Takes place during the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar
- Shorter than the Gregorian calendar, which causes the change in time from year to year.
- Ramadan is the obligatory spiritual period of abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking, chewing and sexual relations from dawn to sundown
- For the scope of our practice, we are only going to discuss diet, sleep, and hydration
Why is it Important?
- The first verse of the Quran revealed to prophet Muhammed
- One of the 5 pillars of Islam each physically and mentally able Muslim must perform
- Salah (prayer)
- Zakat (giving to the poor)
- Hajj (“hidg” pilgrimage to Mecca)
- Fasting
- Faith

Why is Ramadan important to us?
- Inclusion
- Treat everyone the same!
- Second largest religion
- Time of year
- Fasting
- History (2012 Olympics held during Ramadan)
- Detroit (largest Muslim population outside of the middle east)
- Some sports/teams/schools adjust whole schedules when possible.
What Important Factors do ATs need to consider?
- Diet
- Hydration
- Sleep
- Exercise
- Emergency procedures
- Cold towels, cooling procedures and when to give water
What other things should we consider?
- Inclusion
- End of the year banquets
- Take-home meals
- Pizza/Pasta parties
- Will not be able to participate but please include
