Sports Medicine Course Best Practices – 323

If you teach Sports Medicine in the secondary setting then you likely have been with curriculum support.  In a way that is great and allows you to make or create anything you want.  But on the same hand you must either create everything or beg borrow and steal it from somewhere else.

Here are a few people I know teach some good lessons in Sports Medicine, so take what you want and use as best you can in your situation.

Cardiovascular Death with Dr. John Higgins – 91

Bob Marley allowed us to record and interview the guests of the Memorial Hermann 13th Annual Sports Medicine Update.  In the course of two days we conducted about 24 interviews, streamed live for about 16 hours, and had a lot of help from Dr. Josh Yellen, Dr. Mark Knoblauch, Bill Hale, former student / future Athletic Trainer Jazmin Dozal, and current SAT Sarah Avina.

91 – Causes of Cardiovascular Death in Young Athletes with Dr. John Higgins
– John Higgins, MD, MBA, MPHIL, FACC, FACP, FAHA, FACSM, FASNC, FSGC

Here is our interview with Dr. John P. Higgins.  Since this recording comes from a live conference, some elements are lost due to lack of visual props and some crowd noise can be heard.  The stellar content more than makes up for the difference in sound quality.

Have I Succeeded Part 2 featuring Dr. Knoblauch and Dr. Yellen – 85

As a Sports Medicine Teacher I desire to teach the students how to do my job.  I also desire to expose them to different areas of Sports Medicine and teach life skills.  Sports Medicine 1 is an introduction course so we have to save some for year 2.  I want to know from the kids if I have given them a foundation to build upon.

Give ’em the SportsFinger with Jesse Rhinier – 61

Jesse Rhinier invented the PowerSplint's Sports Finger out of personal need.  Realizing he had a product that many people could benefit from he used his real estate skills to develop and market the SportsFinger. Towards the end of our discussion he tells listeners how they can receive a free sample to test with their athletes.

The LION Program with Cat Webb and Spring Woods Sports Medicine – 59

During pre-med courses Cat web learned an interesting philosophy: See one, Do one, Teach one.  This has influenced her teaching style and created some pretty big ripples in Spring Branch ISD.  Administrators talk about vertical alignment, however Mrs. Webb and her students demonstrate it by teaching 5th graders Sports Medicine skills.

Kinect with Rehab – 51

Episode 51 Kinect with Rehab

At their previous places of employment both Bubba Wilson and Cat Lawrence had an Xbox Kinect.  Ours has been open for about 2 weeks and have not used it for athletes yet.  They have most of the knowledge and insight, I am just the pretty face on this one.

I would recommend viewing the YouTube or Ustream video of this episode to watch the conversation.
