How can an AT become a PA?
Reagan Dunnahoo has a unique skill set. She was a practicing AT who went back to school to get her Physician Assistant license. Reagan is now working at a small school where she is both the PA and AT.
Here is an infogrgraphic from AAPA.ORG
PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. With thousands of hours of medical training, PAs are versatile and collaborative.
PAs practice in every state and in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality.
When Reagan went to PA school she felt she could have done a better job leading the orthopedic section of the course than her instructor due to her extensive training with AT.
As a PA you have a greater responsibility for each patient and your patient population is larger.
Skills learned as an AT absolutely help Reagan succeed as a Physician Assistant.
PA school consumed about 95% of her time.
Over half of her graduating class is not still practicing as a PA
You are not allowed to work to earn income while attending most programs
Only one marriage survived her cohort
There is a lack of autonomy with PAs. It is actually easier to work on your own as a nurse practitioner than a Physician Assistant

The next level of recovery is upon us with the Kelvi Hot and Cold system. We have learned in the past how contrast therapy can help and athlete recovery through an injury. Unfortunately it can become time consuming switching back and forth between different modalities to help us achieve the benefits of contrast therapy.
The Kelvi therapy unit is a digital system that provides a safe and effective modality to quickly go from hot to cold and back again with real time feedback and sensors to maintain a safe environment for healing and recovery.
This machine is really neat.
Within in about 60 seconds you can switch from 108 degrees to 45 degrees
You can measure skin temperature to prevent injury
It comes with an app to easily control the device and set up treatment programs
I personally put the device on me and cold was cold and warm was warm.

I am just sitting here waiting for your tweet

Is nursing your next career move?
Some Athletic Trainers just need to move on, so we talk about nursing as a career option for ATs looking to apply their skills in a different setting.
I did a rotation at a PT clinic in college. I realized I was bored inside of the clinic. The sports, sidelines and patient population were what drew me in and interested me in AT.
I have note done rotations as a nurse student so I can not speak to the issue with personal experience. However I know a few ATs who have made the jump and are here to share.
Shawna Bailey and Robin Quezada both obtained their BOC and went right back and got to school for nursing. They joins us to share stories of why and how.
Robin and Shawna reflect on their decisions and know that for them nursing was the best options.
They also both agree that AT helped them be better in their current job and are thankful for the training and skills they were able to learn.
Thank you Tanya Watson for connecting us.

Professional Duty to improve
I work outside with sports. If working 9-5 inside daily is your happy place then more power to you. But for Chris it is torture.
Being from the Pacific Northwest Chris loves to be outside.
Longest professional sports season
Chris Rumsey is an outdoor guy. Really anything outdoros will do, but to really get away he heads back home.
He still needs to explore some more of Europe too.
If dehydrating your self while on vacation is part of your routine then plan ahead and take some HOIST with you to re-hydrate and rapidly recover.

I am a huge fan of Physical Therapy. One is not better than the other, as we both have our unique strengths. and weaknesses
It is easy for me to admit that almost all PTs I deal with are going to have a more thorough evaluation and rehab skill set than me.
However most PTs will also admit they do not have the same confidence in immediate eval, wound care, emergency medicine.
