Imbalance and Disequilibrium – 532

Did you know your concussion may just be an imbalance…

Dr. Mark Knoblauch shares some personal and professional experience in dealing with / treating these concussion like symptoms.

So it is not a concussion?

Here is the scenario:

  • Athlete hit in the head,
  • Has balance problems
  • No trouble with memory
  • Head only hurts at the spot of impact

Is this athlete going to be put under Concussion RTP?

So what are we looking at then?

Dr. Mark Knoblauch joins us to discuss vestibular injuries….which might not actually be concussions.

Email Dr. Knoblauch to receive his free gift –
maknobla@Central.UH.EDU

Some of the topics Mark covers include:

  • Why do you have an interest in vestibular disorders?
  • Tell me about your own personal history with
  • Explain how the vestibular system works?
  • What are some of the signs and symptoms of the more common vestibular disorders?
  • What is the prevalence of some of these disorders?
  • If these disorders are prevalent, as you say, why do you think that there is very little attention in education about them?
  • What are some of the disorders or conditions that can result from the vestibular system?
  • What treatments are available
  • How do some of the vestibular disorders differ from concussions,
  • How can athletic trainers differentiate the two types of conditions?
  • What kind of education do we need specific to teaching our profession and students more about vestibular disorders?

Have WRIST and THUMB Questions?

Dr. Candice Teunis is one of my favorite teachers I have learned from.  As a hand surgeon she has such an incredible understanding of the hand, wrist and thumb.

Becoming a Physician Assistant – 530

How can an AT become a PA?

Interested in going from AT to Physician Assistant?

Reagan Dunnahoo has a unique skill set.  She was a practicing AT who went back to school to get her Physician Assistant license.  Reagan is now working at a small school where she is both the PA and AT.

PA, Physician Assistant, Physicians assistant, AT To PA, Reagan Dunnahoo, Hatch Schools

What is a PA?

Here is an infogrgraphic from AAPA.ORG

PAs are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. With thousands of hours of medical training, PAs are versatile and collaborative.

PAs practice in every state and in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality.

Who do the skills of an AT and PA work together?

When Reagan went to PA school she felt she could have done a better job leading the orthopedic section of the course than her instructor due to her extensive training with AT.

As a PA you have a greater responsibility for each patient and your patient population is larger.

Skills learned as an AT absolutely help Reagan succeed as a Physician Assistant.

Things to really consider:

PA school consumed about 95% of her time.

Over half of her graduating class is not still practicing as a PA

You are not allowed to work to earn income while attending most programs

Only one marriage survived her cohort

There is a lack of autonomy with PAs. It is actually easier to work on your own as a nurse practitioner than a Physician Assistant

How can I ask more questions of Reagan?

Email Reagan – rdunnahoo@hatchschools.net

Kelvi Heat and Cold Therapy – 527

The next level of recovery is upon us with the Kelvi Hot and Cold system. We have learned in the past how contrast therapy can help and athlete recovery through an injury. Unfortunately it can become time consuming switching back and forth between different modalities to help us achieve the benefits of contrast therapy.

The Kelvi therapy unit is a digital system that provides a safe and effective modality to quickly go from hot to cold and back again with real time feedback and sensors to maintain a safe environment for healing and recovery.

Kelvi; Scott; Howerton

What are my thoughts?

This machine is really neat.

Within in about 60 seconds you can switch from 108 degrees to 45 degrees

You can measure skin temperature to prevent injury

It comes with an app to easily control the device and set up treatment programs

I personally put the device on me and cold was cold and warm was warm.

Switching to Nursing – 526

Is nursing your next career move?

Looking to move into Nursing?

Some Athletic Trainers just need to move on, so we talk about nursing as a career option for ATs looking to apply their skills in a different setting.

I did a rotation at a PT clinic in college.  I realized I was bored inside of the clinic. The sports, sidelines and patient population were what drew me in and interested me in AT.

I have note done rotations as a nurse student so I can not speak to the issue with personal experience.  However I know a few ATs who have made the jump and are here to share.

Shawna Bailey and Robin Quezada both obtained their BOC and went right back and got to school for nursing.  They joins us to share stories of why and how.

Robin and Shawna reflect on their decisions and know that for them nursing was the best options.

They also both agree that AT helped them be better in their current job and are thankful for the training and skills they were able to learn.

Thank you Tanya Watson for connecting us.

Things to consider:

  • Cost
  • Travel
  • Books
  • Lost income
  • Job Opportunities
  • Current Student Debt
  • Is this really where you see yourself being the most beneficial?

Being from the Pacific Northwest Chris loves to be outside.

What is the hardest part of being an MLS AT?

Longest professional sports season

Favorite way to take a break?

Chris Rumsey is an outdoor guy. Really anything outdoros will do, but to really get away he heads back home.

He still needs to explore some more of Europe too.

AT to DPT – 523

Athletic Trainer to Physical Therapist

Satisfied with your work conditions? Want to become a DPT?

Greg Perry is currently a physical therapist and athletic trainer at Houston Methodist The Woodlands. He received his DPT from UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2017, and his license in Athletic Training from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches,TX in 2013. Greg has worked in athletic training at multiple levels from high school to the NFL, as well as physical therapy primarily in the orthopedic and sports sector.

Greg Perry, AT to DPT, DPT

Daria Oller is a physical therapist at Foundations Physical Therapy in Washington Township, New Jersey. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Seton Hall University in 2010. Prior to that, she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in athletic training from James Madison University in 2006. She has worked in a variety of clinical athletic training settings from youth sports to collegiate, including New York University. She has also conducted youth sport injury epidemiology research at Penn State University, which has been presented and published. She specializes in dance medicine.

DPT, Daria

Both join the show podcast to discuss options for Athletic Trainers who desire something different.

I am a huge fan of Physical Therapy.   One is not better than the other, as we both have our unique strengths. and weaknesses

It is easy for me to admit that almost all PTs I deal with are going to have a more thorough evaluation and rehab skill set than me.

However most PTs will also admit they do not have the same confidence in immediate eval, wound care, emergency medicine.

Why make the switch?

  • You may want more predictable hours
  • Or to only be indoors
  • You may want more money
  • You might just not be happy with your career and looking to change
  • The challenge of high school athletes is not enough for you
  • A new level of AT opens up with dual credntials

What I love about being an AT

  • Sports
  • Medical aspect
  • Building relationships
  • Mentoring students
  • allowing my children to come to work with me
  • Best seat for the games
  • Challenges me constantly
  • I get to go workout or shoot hoops as part of my job

What I wish I could change:

  • Games over holidays
  • Games on weekends
  • Communication with coaches
  • Improved care for all athletes (junior high)
  • Better understanding from Administration
  • Increased pay or decreased hours
  • More focus on continued learning
