Tragedy, Death, Grief & Healing – 135

CPR is a skill you never hope to use, NEVER.  Dealing with the loss of an athlete after performing CPR and using an AED is not supposed to happen.  It did, and I share my story and the grief process.  This podcast is recorded early in the stages of grieving.

#1 tip if you know someone dealing with grief and loss:
Text or email them “I was just thinking about you, wondering how you are doing.  If you find you need something let me know”

This gives them a chance to easily avoid talking if they do not want to talk at that time or to you but allows them to know they are not alone.

#2 Tip do it again once a week for the next few weeks.

People process things differently.

Fixing Water Stations – 134

Robbie McFarlin and Casey Pyle have fixed a few water stations in their days.  I am not to bad myself with creating ways to make out life on the field a little bit easier.  Listen as we discuss what has worked, what has failed, and what we would like to see in future models of water dispensing systems.

Leading the Way in the Secondary Setting – 132

David and I agree, we are most passionate about our student athletic trainer programs.  That is the part of the job we want to do better than anything else.  Luckily for both of us we have co-workers who can balance us out.

David Young has been winning awards with his student Athletic Trainers for about 4 years now.  They also have 4 full time Athletic Trainers on staff.  We spoke with them previously on episode 126 Concussion Protocol and mTBI

Female AT Struggles – 131

Sonia Gysland has broken the ranks of professional football; Dawn Stuckey is a head Athletic Trainer at Rice University; Christina Cope is an Athletic Trainer at Klein High School.  All three have teamed up to discuss some of the struggles for female Athletic Trainers.

Thanks for the special contributions from @FemaleATProbs

Top 10 reasons it is so tough being a female athletic trainer:

10. Apparently Spice Girls music is not appropriate pre game music
9. Wearing make up means we’re trying to impress someone
8. Not wearing make up means we’re either sick or very tired (even when we’re neither.)
7. Football/wrestling coaches think we know nothing about football/wrestling
6. Being asked to homecoming, prom, or any other school function is not what we had in mind when we go on dates…

Meals Athletes Can Make – 127

Registered Dietitians Brett Singer (Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine) and Rita Zapien (H-E-B Grocery Stores) team up to bring practical meal advice for athletes.  Two of my favorite tips are:
1. Take students / athletes on a field trip to the store and show them what to buy.
2.  Speak with a RD and set up a store tour.

These two tips can really bring home the value and are super practical.
