Doctor Luis Urrea talks ACLs – 507

Who is Doctor Luis Urrea

Dr. Urrea is a regular attendee for the Davis Mountain clinic and joins Bubba for an interview after his talk.

With a special interest in knee and hip Dr. Urrea aligns very closely with Bubba Wilson's new thinking on ACL rehab and RTP.

ACLs, and pretty much all surgeries, should require functional testing to advance physical therapy or rehabilitation.

Luis Urrea

What should ACL RTP look like?

Instead of being a time based approach they should b able to perform specific tasks or movements before moving on to the next phase.

Once you can do 3 sets of 10 wall squats we move to TRX squats, then to body weight squats, then loaded squats…

It was a rainy night out in Fort Davis and you can hear that in back ground.

Building a Sports Medicine TEAM – 502

Who is on YOUR Team?

Are you and local medical providers on the Same Team?

Dr. Josh Yellen is the program director for the University of Houston MAT program.  He must build relationships with local medical providers to give his students the best possible exposure.  He is teaching his students to be on the same team and build each other up as we grow in the medical profession.

What are you doing?

What have you done that has worked in building relationships with local medical providers?

Have you gone out and met any of our local providers?

Have you brought other medical professionals into your Athletic Training Clinic so they can see what you do or even co-treat athletes?

Tweet it to me or comment on the live Facebook Live Video

Here is what we recommend:

  • Create a one page letter to give to local medical providers
  • Ask to meet with the office manager
  • Ask what their rehab protocols are for certain injuries
  • Invite them to join you for  day in the clinic or sidelines
  • Attend workshops outside of your normal domain
  • Set up a training for equipment removal and invite the local EMS and standalone ER clinics

Want some more resources?

Injury Spotter with Jonathan Reidy – 498

How can we do better?  How can we improve the health care we are providing?

When Jonathan Reidy asked this question at his high school he started putting together a plan to mimic the NFL eye in the sky plan to have an injury spotter in the booth that can help identify injuries.

His program is probably similar to most high schools that have a full time athletic trainer.

They also have a team doc that has several medical students committed to being part of the game night treatment and care.

This might not work in all schools, but unless you try it out then you never know.
