Challenging the Status Quo – 590

Kent Games Coaching is all about challenging the status quo. He was one of the youngest professors to be offered tenure. Kent was obtaining his dream job at his alma mater.

But that wasn't enough. He still felt empty.

Challenging the Status Quo

Dr. Kent Games began evaluating his life through these questions:

  • Did I LIVE?
  • Did I LOVE?
  • Did I MATTER?

Alisha is always growing and challenging the status quo

If you follow Alisha Pennington, owner of ATvantage, on social media she readily admits to her lack of confidence, her need for approval, her attempts to hide doubts and fears.

She has learned to embrace those doubts and fears and test them.

Live from NATA 2019

DragonflyMax hosted the podcast lounge again this year and we had a phenomenal team of hosts and workers to put on a fantastic show.

Kent and Alisha answer three big questions:

  • Why
  • How
  • What

Following the Simon Sinek book Start With Why and the follow up Find Your Why Kent and Alisha work through the foundation of what it takes to challenge the status quo.

Some bits of knowledge from the conversation:

Finding your why is as much about what it is is NOT as is it about what it IS

As professionals, we find there is not one cookie-cutter path, but as students, we are often lead to believe that A+B+C = D and that is how it should work.

The more you give your self permission to listen and explore that quiet whisper the louder your why will become. We are trained to tune it out and follow the leader.

Alisha kept pressing forward looking for that feeling of “I have arrived” but it was never there. She came to learn it is about the journey and not the destination.

Ther are many more helpful and insightful lessons form the podcast. listen to it as many times as you need to.

How are you CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO?

Third Party Billing – 581

What is Third Party Billing?

Third Party Billing means a patient comes in to see the AT and the AT sends the bill for payment to the insurance company. It does not mean you are working at a clinic and being paid hourly by the general fund, but you are billing for services as a PT or DC would.

Who is Joe Greene?

Started at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in 1991

Through various roles at the hospital, he was able to quickly move into an administrative role. Coupled with his state leadership roles, He was really able to look at Third Party Billing a make an impact.

2001 Implemented Autonomous Billing in Wisconsin

What is Orthovise?

The company Joe started to work with physicians and continue growing the autonomous billing aspect of Athletic Training.

2016 NATA issued an RFP pilot project to Joe Green and his team as the pioneer in 3rd party billing

What are the goals of the third party reimbursement project?

Ensure ATs receive reimbursement by insurance companies consistent with other allied healthcare providers. If a PT does manual therapy billed at $60/hour, then the AT acting within their scope doing the same task can be reimbursed at $60/hour.

Secure Consistent recognition of Athletic Trainers as allied health care professionals

What has the pilot study revealed?

  • When ATs bill according to the policy they are reimbursed at a consistent level
  • There are some gaps in analysis
  • Are AT as cost-effective?

What Education is going on with this?

Payor (consumer) and Employers (hospitals/physician) are both needing education

ATs need to be able to bill correctly using the correct codes

100K Side Job – Tim Neal – 578

100K Side Job

Have you ever had a 100K side Job?

If you say “I have a 100k Side Job” you are going to be hounded for followers or ridiculed by haters.

Tim Neal was killing it as an Athletic Trainer making upwards of 200K.

He joins us live a the Dragonfly Max Podcast Lounge in Las Vegas to share his story.

Have reservations about starting a business?

Tim watched his dad run a successful business and kinda always had the drive in him to create his own.

I recently started my own business in the Sports Medicine Broadcast. I have shared my story in episode 552.

I was always afraid to start a business as I have seen how much my dad struggles to own one. My conversation with Rob and Casey helped me to get started on the path, but Innovate really moved me to start

I met Tim Neal in a group for Athletic Trainers who are innovating the industry. If you are innovating or want to innovate, come join us at InnovateAT on facebook

Want to check out the live video:

More About Tim:

From a small town Texas – Greenville, Texas

Did not have an AT in high school, his first exposure was as Texas A&M Commerce

Started working contract work for a PT clinic

Figured out he was pretty good at assembling the coverage and care for large scale events.

Got fired for putting together a proposal to grow his employer's business.

He turned the firing into a job that he turned into a business that has turned into a dream.

Functional Movement Techniques – 575

What is Functional Movement Techniques?

7 courses focused on a graduated or leveling style continuing education

Each course is 6 CEUs

Blades and blades advanced is their Instrument-assisted course

RockPods and RockFloss – similar to cupping and voodoo floss just with a slightly different focus

And their newest Movement Specialist Course

Basically – what is the current science and current myofascial science

Some of the highlights from the podcast:

“Don' let your SCHOOLING get in the way of your EDUCATION” – Mark Twain

Prepare the patient for the path because you can not prepare the path for the patient.

The BEST REHAB TOOL is the patient you are treating

We do not care about practitioners using RockTape. You can bring your own brand and we will still teach you the skills. Bring your other brand tools we do not care.

We might be teaching taping techniques, but that is really the centerpiece. We teach the functional anatomy and theory all wrapped in the taping course.

Where can you see what Functional Movement looks like?

Funny Concussion Stories with Dr. Burkhart – 516

Want to hear a funny story? Dr. Burkhart has some for you.

Every AT has funny injury stories.  Rob is a walking story.  Dr. Scott Burkhart has tons of stories.  These two together had a great time telling funny concussion stories of patients they have seen.
Concussion Stories; Scott Burkhart; Rob McFarlin
Dr. Scott Burkhart sees about 500 concussion patients per month so he has some stories.
This session is a great listen just for the funny stories.

Do you have some Concussion Stories?

SSAT: Where are we going? – 512

Where are we going in the SSATC?

Some of us feel left out, some of us feel unsupported.  So where is the NATA's SSATC leading us?
How are THEY supporting us?
When are THEY going to start looking out fur the SSATs?
Those are great questions for Bart and Jason.
SSATC; Bart Peterson; Jason Cates; Secondary Schools Athletic Trainers Committee;
Jason Cates and Bart Peterson provide leadership to the Secondary School Athletic Trainers Committee.  They join us hot off the SSAT learning lab to share their insight and where are headed. These are great ATs who are true advocates for the secondary setting.

How can you get one of these shirts?

Find me at one of the future NATA events and I will have them there.  I have randomly sent some out to people who are very active on social media promoting the Sports Medicine Broadcast.
Or join the email list and you will know where I will be giving them out.

Injury Spotter with Jonathan Reidy – 498

How can we do better?  How can we improve the health care we are providing?

When Jonathan Reidy asked this question at his high school he started putting together a plan to mimic the NFL eye in the sky plan to have an injury spotter in the booth that can help identify injuries.

His program is probably similar to most high schools that have a full time athletic trainer.

They also have a team doc that has several medical students committed to being part of the game night treatment and care.

This might not work in all schools, but unless you try it out then you never know.
